MOB Lesson 7 - 1 John 2:29 - 3:10

wooden cross SM
What a powerful message Pastor John gave us this weekend kicking off our new study of Joshua. I am really excited for it.

Something for you to ponder. In Joshua 1:7-8 God makes a promise to Joshua. Does that promise to Joshua apply to us today or was it only for Joshua. Pastor John made a great point that he said these promises are parallel for us today as Christians. I can’t wait to learn more and more and how these promises are applied. Anyways I digress.

This week we are on Lesson 7 of 1 John. This week should cause you a bit of uncomfortableness. It is one of those places in scripture that we need to wrestle with to understand. The keyword for me is “practices” as John talks about sin. Hope you enjoy the study and I have provided a sermon this week from John Piper. Read More...

We are onto the next study after a 1.5 years of studying Genesis which was an absolute blessing. We are entering the book of 1 John. This is one powerful book in the Bible. We have come a long way over the past year in our study of Genesis and it has been such a blessing to study through Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We are now entering into the amazing life of Joseph. He is one of those individuals who exemplifies what it means to walk with the Lord through any trial. His faithfulness is just beyond belief and is something for each of us to consider in our own lives.

We will be starting lesson 17 and answer questions 1-4 on pages 176-179.

Instead of posting commentaries for each of the questions I think this sermon from John Piper is very powerful and hopefully will give you some insight into the life of Joseph.

MOB Lesson 13 Genesis 22:1-25:33 - Part 1

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. I have really missed meeting with my MOB group these last two weeks and I am ready to get back in the swing of things.

This week we are going to be reading Chapters 22-25 in Genesis and answering questions 1-5 in lesson 13.

I have attached a sermon by George Whitefield 1714-1770. This sermon has a lot of good nuggets in it. I am also attaching at the bottom of this page some other commentaries on the specific verses in Chapter 22.

Genesis 22:12 - "And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him, for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy Son, thine only Son from me."

The great Apostle Paul, in one of his epistles, informs us, that "whatsoever was written aforetime was written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the holy scripture might have hope." And as without faith it is impossible to please God, or be accepted in Jesus, the Son of his love; we may be assured, that whatever instances of a more than common faith are recorded in the book of God, they were more immediately designed by the Holy Spirit for our learning and imitation, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Genesis 20:1-2

Here is, 1. Abraham's removal from Mamre, where he had lived nearly twenty years, into the country of the Philistines: He sojourned in Gerar, Gen_20:1. We are not told upon what occasion he removed, whether terrified by the destruction of Sodom, or because the country round was for the present prejudiced by it, or, as some of the Jewish writers say, because he was grieved at Lot's incest with his daughters, and the reproach which the Canaanites cast upon him and his religion, Read More...

MOB Lesson 11 Genesis 18:1-19:38 - Part 4

LotSM
This week we will be wrapping up lesson 11 in Genesis 19. Please answer questions 14-16 on pages 130-131 for this weeks study. I know we didn't finish everything last week so we will be catching up a bit.

One thing I want to note about this study and that is if anyone thinks that the Bible is a bunch of made up stories I would contest that with the story of Lot. It shows a real ugly side of a righteous man. I mean if this was all made up would we put this kind of horrible sin as a representative of someone being a righteous man? The bible is definitely not condoning what Lot did but is recording history as accurately as possible. Who's kind of righteousness should we be following after? Lot or Abraham? Look at their lives and how each turned out. I will opt for the life of Abraham and follow God in obedience instead of trying to flirt with the world like Lot did.

If anyone has more to add please do! Thanks!

SodomGomorrahsm
This weeks lesson will cover chapter 19 of Genesis. We will be answering questions 10-13 on pages 127-130.

This chapter is one ugly chapter for man and really reveals how messed up things can get. What keeps going through my mind is why God spared Lot. Lot is one interesting biblical character. I don't see a lot of holiness and righteousness in his behavior. But what does Peter say about Lot? Peter writes in 2 Peter Chapter 2:6-8

if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard)

sodomandgahmorraSM
This week please answer questions 4-9 on pages 125-127. We will be focusing on Genesis 18:16-33.

I have included three resources for this study, the first is on the city of Sodom and Gomorrah, the second is Matthew Henry's commentary and last is a sermon from Scott Lindsey

SODOM AND GOMORRAH

Sodom and Gomorrah are two cities in the Bible associated with evil. They were cities of the plain or valley (Genesis 13:12). There were five cities located in the valley of Siddim (i.e., the Salt Sea). Of these, Sodom is mentioned most frequently in Genesis-thirty-six times in all. Sodom became known in as the supreme example of a wicked city. Its destruction (19:24) was used as a warning of God’s judgment in other biblical writings (Deuteronomy 29:23; Isaiah 1:9-10; Jeremiah 23:14; Jeremiah 49:18; Lamentations 4:6; Amos 4:11; Zephaniah 2:9). The story of Sodom’s destruction found its place also in the New Testament (Matthew 10:15; Luke 10:12; 17:29; Romans 9:29; 2 Peter 2:6; Jude 1:7; Revelation 11:8).
